• This updater updates versions 2.0 and 2.0.1 of Now Up-to-Date™ to version 2.1. It does not update version 1.0, 1.0.1, any of the Demonstration versions, or any non-US versions of Now Up-to-Date.
• This updater does not modify Calendar Files. Please read the update instructions below for more information on converting your Calendar File to 2.1.

Back up before continuing
-----------------------
Please make backup copies of the following files before continuing with the update:
• Your Calendar File.
The easiest way to back up your Calendar File is to highlight its icon at the Finder’s desktop and choose “Duplicate” from the File menu.
• Your Public Event Server database.
Locate your Public Event Server.database file in the Extensions folder (System Folder for System 6). While holding down the Option key on your keyboard, drag the Public Event Server.database file to your Finder’s desktop. This will place a copy of the file on the desktop as a backup.
Backing up these files is a precaution in case disk errors or other problems occur when updating and converting your files.
** SPECIAL NOTE to compression software users: We recommend that you decompress all of the following files before updating:
• Now Up-to-Date application
• Reminder (if you have items in your System Folder compressed)
• Public Event Server (if you have items in your System Folder compressed)
If you restart your Macintosh without your compression software running, the Now Up-to-Date Updater will not recognize your compressed files. **
1. Launch your version 2.0 Calendar File. This will ensure that all changes made in the Reminder menu will be reflected in your Calendar File.
2. Quit Now Up-to-Date.
3. Restart the Macintosh with no INITs or extensions running (especially virus protection software).
The easiest way to accomplish this under System 7 is to restart the Macintosh while holding down the Shift Key. If you are running System 6, use a startup utility to “skip” all INITs and cdevs, or move all such items outside your System Folder temporarily and then restart.
4. Locate and launch the Now Up-to-Date 2.1 Updater application. After a few seconds the Updater will present a dialog box displaying the components of Now Up-to-Date 2.0 that it has located. The Updater will locate items in your currently-active System Folder and will search all locally-mounted hard drives for any occurrence of the Now Up-to-Date 2.0 application.
5. Click the “Update” button to update the listed components automatically.
When the update is complete you are presented with a dialog box that prompts you to restart your Macintosh.
6. Click the “Restart” button.
Your update is complete. Please refer to the “Converting your Calendar File” section below.
** SPECIAL NOTE to compression software users: We recommend that you decompress all of the Now Up-to-Date files before updating**
There are a few circumstances where you might want to manually update your Now Up-to-Date 2.0 files.
• You want to update copies of Reminder and the Public Event Server extension that reside in a non-active System Folder.
• You want to update a Now Up-to-Date application that resides on a remote volume or floppy disk.
• You want to update the Now Installer application that resides on a remote volume or floppy disk.
• You want to update an unlocked backup copy of your master diskette.
1. Launch your version 2.0 Calendar File. This will ensure that all changes made in the Reminder menu will be reflected in your Calendar File.
2. Quit Now Up-to-Date.
3. Restart the Macintosh with no INITs or extensions running (especially virus protection software).

4. Launch the Now Up-to-Date 2.1 Updater.
5. In the main Updater dialog box, click the “Custom” button.
You are presented with a directory dialog box prompting you to locate one of the Now Up-to-Date 2.0 components (Reminder, Public Event Server, Now Up-to-Date or the Installer).
6. Locate the first component that you want to update.
You can insert a floppy disk at this point to update a backup copy of your master diskette.
7. Click the “Open” button to update the selected item.
After the component is updated, you are returned to the directory dialog box described in Step 5.
8. Follow Steps 6 & 7 for the remaining Now Up-to-Date 2.0 components you would like to update.
9. After updating all of the selected components, click the “Cancel” button.
You are returned to the main Updater dialog box.
10. Click “Quit.”
If you have updated Reminder or the Public Event Server in an active System Folder, you will be prompted with a Restart dialog box. Click “Restart” to restart your Macintosh.
** SPECIAL NOTE to compression software users: We recommend that you decompress all of the Now Up-to-Date files before updating**
The Updater will allow you to update Now Up-to-Date components using a “drag-and-drop” method—basically, by simply dragging components to be updated over the Updater application’s icon. The advantage of this option is you will not be presented with any of the directory dialog boxes described in earlier steps. (Note: The drag-and-drop feature is available only under System 7.)
1. Launch your version 2.0 Calendar File. This will ensure that all changes made in the Reminder menu will be reflected in your Calendar File.
2. Quit Now Up-to-Date.
3. Restart the Macintosh with no INITs or extensions running (especially virus protection software).
The easiest way to accomplish this under System 7 is to restart the Macintosh while holding down the Shift Key. If you are running System 6, use a startup utility to “skip” all INITs and cdevs, or move all such items outside your SYstem Folder temporarily and then restart.
4. Locate and place all of your Now Up-to-Date 2.0 components in one location. You can place them all in a folder or on a floppy disk.
5. Locate the Now Up-to-Date 2.1 Updater and place it on your Finder’s desktop.
6. Open the floppy disk or folder containing the Now Up-to-Date 2.0 components you want to update. **Don’t forget that you can update the Now Installer too.**
7. Choose “Select All” from the Finder’s Edit menu.
This will select all of the files in the open floppy disk or folder window.
8. Drag one of the selected files until the Now Up-to-Date Updater icon is highlighted.
9. Release the mouse button to launch the Updater and proceed with the update.
You will not see any dialog boxes during the update process, unless the Updater has difficulties updating the selected components. The Updater will automatically quit when the update is complete.
When the update is complete, you can place the updated files back in their original locations or run the updated Now Installer to install new Now Up-to-Date 2.1 files on your Macintosh.

Converting your Calendar File to version 2.1
-----------------------------------------
You remembered to make a backup copy of your Calendar File, right? This is a precaution, in case disk errors or other problems occur when the Calendar File is converted.
1. Launch the newly-updated copy of the Now Up-to-Date application.
2. Choose “Open...” from the File menu.
3. Locate your old-version Calendar File, select it, and click “Open.”
A dialog box appears asking if you wish to convert this file to the current format.
4. Click the “Convert” button.
Your Calendar File opens, having been converted to the newly-updated version.
After you have converted your Calendar File to the updated version, you will need to re-select it in the Reminder.
1. Click on the Reminder clock in the Menu bar.
2. Choose the “Select a Calendar...” command.
3. Locate and select the Calendar File you are using, and click “Open.”

Special Note to System 6 users (Rebuild your Desktop)

If you have trouble opening your converted Calendar File by double-clicking, you should rebuild your desktop.
1. Restart your Macintosh
2. While the computer is starting up, hold down the COMMAND and OPTION keys on your keyboard until you get a message asking you to rebuild your Desktop.
3. Click the OK button to proceed with the rebuild.
4. Locate and double click on your Calendar File. The Now Up-to-Date application should now launch and open your converted Calendar File.
